Many seniors face skin problem. One of those many skin conditions that seniors could face is Eczema. Eczema conducts of many types of skin conditions. It is also called dermatitis. Common symptoms are inflamed or irritated skin, swollen, itchy and red. Though, Eczema is not dangerous and is not contagious, it can be very unpleasant and unhealthy to a person who diagnosed with it.
A most common eczema is called atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. Atopic eczema is an allergic condition that makes your skin dry and itchy. It can be developed from other allergic conditions such as asthma and hay fever; sometimes it developed from an allergy reaction to chemicals. Atopic eczema can appear from all over the body especially on their hands due to the direct contact. People are often diagnosed with it when they are young and most outgrow it when they grow up. Yet, some people continue to have it in their adulthood.
Eczema can be very unpleasant due to the itch-scratch cycle. It happens with an intense itch then you scratch it hard until you bleed and that caused the rash to become worse. With a rash, it leads to an inflammation and itching even more.
Eczema can be easily spotted with these signs and symptoms:
Dry, sensitive skin
Intense itching
Red, inflamed skin
Recurring rash
Scaly areas
Rough, leather patches
Oozing or crusting
Areas of swelling
Dark colored patches of skin
These are some common causes and triggers:
Irritants: many chemicals that you contact everyday can irritate you such as shampoo, dish detergent, or contact with juices from fresh fruits, meats, vegetables
Allergens: many people are allergic to pets, house dust mites, or pollen
Microbes: certain bacteria, viruses, certain fungi
Hot or cold temperatures: hot weather or high/low humidity
Foods: many people get allergy to food such as nuts, sea food, or dairy products
Stress: stress can trigger many health conditions. Eczema can get worse when you are stressed.
Hormones: Hormones can cause a wide variety of effects.
