Imagine yourself staying at home day after day, not even having any parks to walk about since you live in the middle of a very busy city. There will really come a point wherein you will question your sanity because of the routine you keep on following. What more for the elderly who does not have the capacity to just walk out and about without a companion? When that is the current situation you are in, then it is high time for you to take out our seniors and have an outing. Having an outing with our elderly can be overwhelming but with proper preparation, everything can be fun and worthwhile.
Preparing for the trip
You will need to scout or at least be familiar with the place that you will visit making sure that it is appropriate for the elderly. Check out places that have complete facilities, like a lot of chairs or benches for the once-young to sit by when tired, clean toilet and also ones which have wheelchair access and nearby parking lots. If it may be a building, make sure that it has elevator access.
Things to bring
Having an outing with the seniors is almost like bringing a child with you. You need to make sure that you have ample food and water just in case they might get hungry or thirsty. Also check the weather for that day to make sure that the elderly has suitable clothing. There is no harm in bringing extra rugs or emergency kits as well. Lastly, make sure that the medicines are enough for the trip. Better yet, bring extra doses just in cases of unforeseen extensions to your trip.
Outside activities
One of the things that the elderly can do is to take a leisurely walk in a local park or even water sheds so they can enjoy the change of scenery and the beauty that nature can provide. Just make sure to take note of the route to take since this may involve small hills to climb. It would be much better for the elderly to have long but flat promenades so they can enjoy the scenery for a longer time. There are also leisure farms where they can play with farm animals or even a local zoo where they can pet the animals or have pictures with them. It would be much more enjoyable if you have a tour guide specially if there is a large assortment of animals. Asides from these, you can also go to shopping districts or resorts where one can relax and get a tan. This may be the time for the elderly to take on a new hobby like photography, bird watching, scrap booking or starting a new collection so they may have a sense of purpose especially if they may be a workaholic before retiring.
With these activities and things to do, you may notice that it may not be a relaxing time for you, but may it be for your grandparents or if you are a caregiver of the elderly, this outing is sure to make your once-young loved ones have fun and have a better perspective in life.
